Q: How do I plant my seedlings? A: Prune roots slightly and place in a bucket of water for a few minutes prior to planting. Plant to same depth as indicated by soil line on plant. Soil line is indicated by a change in color on the stem. Planting too deep or too shallow can cause a plant to die. Plant trees and shrubs from 4 to 8 feet on centers with 8 feet between rows. Plant groundcovers (Ivy, Pachysandra, Myrtle) 4-6" apart. It is better to wait one year before applying fertilizer to planted area. GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY!
Q: How do I plant a Daylily? A: Open box upon arrival. If planting is to be delayed put the plastic bag in refrigerator for a short time. Prepare soil as you like adding a small amount of compost is preferred. Dig your hole to the depth of the daylily leaving the very small tips exposed. Create a small mound of soil at the bottom of the hole and spread the roots over it. Back fill the hole with the remaining soil/compost mixture, tamp the area well and water. Water is very important the first few weeks. Once new growth appears Mother Nature can take over except in drought conditions. It is better to wait one year before applying fertilizer to planted area.
Q: Where to plant? A: The most important thing to remember when deciding on where to place your new plant is the mature size of the plant to avoid planting too close together, near a structure or under a power line. Also think about the immediate area for sun exposure and available moisture. Remeber to have your soil tested for neccessary admendments pre-plant.
Q: When to plant A: All bare root plant material should be planted before the new buds open. In the northeast that is before May 30th. In the central states that is before May 15th. Keep in mind that our plants are kept dormante until they ship so if you order after the May dates you still have 3 to 4 days after receiving them to plant before the buds open.
Q: What do I do with the plants when they arrive: A: Open box immediately and remove poly bag. Check roots for moisture and add only if dry. Keep plant tops dry. Place poly bag in cool(40 degrees) dark place until ready to plant. Plant within three days. |
